Our Work
Samaritan Children Home
At Samaritan Children’s Home, we are committed to providing orphaned, distressed, resourceless, and helpless children from all backgrounds with the opportunity to thrive. Every year, we receive hundreds of applications, carefully selecting the most vulnerable children to join our program based on the availability of seats. In 2024, 75 new children were admitted, bringing our total to 390 (181 boys and 209 girls) from Nursery to Grade 10.
Once admitted, these children become part of our family and gain access to comprehensive support, including accommodation, nutritious meals, education, school uniforms, clothing, medical care, vocational training, and recreational activities. We follow a structured daily routine that includes five times balanced meals to ensure their physical and emotional well-being. Beyond basic needs, we aim to provide a holistic foundation, helping them grow into confident, independent individuals ready to navigate the world. Many of our former students are now leading successful lives.
Education through Samaritan Shishu Polli High School:
Samaritan Shishu Polli High School, established in 1996, is our educational institution offering classes from Nursery to Grade 10. The school currently educates 614 students, including children from our home as well as those from the surrounding community. With a dedicated team of 17 teachers, we are committed to providing high-quality education and regularly conducting exams to assess academic progress by following the curriculum prescribed by National Curriculum and Textbook Board.
As a model of excellence, our school not only fosters an inclusive learning environment but is also equipped with modern facilities that enrich the educational experience. These include a fully equipped science laboratory, a computer laboratory for technology education, a library with essential learning resources, solar energy support for a reliable backup electricity supply, and a drinking water station to ensure student well-being. Since its inception, Samaritan Shishu Polli High School has been a beacon of quality education, empowering students to thrive academically and personally. By organizing Annual Science Fair, Annual Sports Competition, Football tournament and various national and cultural events; the students also learns about various extra-curricular activities helping them to shape up their learning curve outside of book based knowledge.
Joy Hostel (For grade 11 and 12):
For students who have passed their SSC exams, we offer further support through Joy Hostel, where they can continue their education in Grades 11 and 12. Located 2 kilometers from the children’s home, Joy Hostel helps students adapt to the outside world while covering all their expenses. Currently, 52 students are benefiting from this program, with several preparing for their final Grade 12 public examinations. We take immense pride in the success stories of our students, many of whom are now standing on their own feet, contributing positively to society.
Medical Department
Health protection is a fundamental priority at Samaritan Children’s Home, and we ensure that all our children receive the necessary primary medical care. Our healthcare department operates 24/7, staffed by an MBBS doctor and two nurses, and is equipped with essential medical supplies. The department includes a pharmacy, two beds, and a Medi-kit to handle a range of health needs. The most common issues our medical team addresses include minor injuries from play, skin rashes, stomach aches, coughs, and fevers. In the event of a more serious illness, we immediately transport the child to the nearest hospital for comprehensive medical treatment.
Our medical services extend beyond the children at Samaritan Children’s Home. Recognizing the lack of healthcare facilities in the surrounding community, we also offer low-cost medical support to local residents, playing a vital role in the overall well-being of the area. Through this, we ensure that both our children and the neighboring community have access to essential healthcare services.
Micro Credit Program:
The Micro Credit Project of HELP Bangladesh is another but completely separate organization registered with Microcredit Regulatory Authority (MRA) dedicated to empowering poor and middle-class women across 10 neighboring villages by providing financial loan support to help them start and expand small businesses. Currently with 1,439 active members, the project offers loans ranging from BDT 20,000 to BDT 200,000, enabling women to pursue ventures such as farming, gardening, tailoring, and retail. Through these income-generating activities, participants improve their living standards, achieve financial independence, and contribute to their families’ well-being. The project operates with a 3-year repayment period, flexible monthly installments, and support from a permanent local office, ensuring sustainable growth and lasting impact in the communities it serves.
In response to a directive from the Microcredit Regulatory Authority, loans of BDT 100,000 and above are now disbursed via bank cheques. Initially, this shift was challenging for members, but through guidance and encouragement, they have successfully adapted, marking an important step in their financial empowerment through flower cultivation, personal land and leased land cultivation, vegetable farming, small-scale poultry farming, livestock rearing, grocery stores, tailoring shops, and rental housing construction and many other small income generating businesses.
Sewing and Shop Program:
The Darka Sewing and Shop project is a self – sustainable initiative aimed at empowering the girls of the Children’s Home. Through this project, local women receive training in tailoring and dressmaking, allowing them to work from home or market spaces, while children from the Home who struggle academically are given opportunities to learn practical skills such as dress cutting and tailoring. This initiative not only promotes socio-economic development but also plays a key role in the empowerment of women and girls by providing them with valuable income-generating skills.
Given the lack of nearby garment shops requiring residents to travel 8 kilometers to Savar for clothing—the Sewing Center has stepped in to address this need by stocking a variety of ready-made garments. The shop also offers cosmetics, dry foods, liquid drinks, ice cream, and other daily essentials, catering to both the Children’s Home and the wider community. The operation of the Sewing Center is managed by two former residents of the Children’s Home, who work diligently to ensure its smooth running from morning to evening, seven days a week. Their dedication ensures the project’s continued success and the convenience it brings to residents, offering them a one-stop shop for clothes and essential goods in the area.
Computer Training Lab:
Through our Computer Training Lab, our students from Grades 6 to 10 have access to modern technology, exploring vast digital knowledge and developing key computer skills under the guidance of trainer. Though the national curriculum doesn’t mandate practical exams for ICT, Samaritan Children Home integrates a 25% practical component, ensuring students gain hands-on experience. The lab’s benefits also extend beyond the classroom, offering professional training to individuals in the community, including local youth, enhancing their employability. This year, the computer lab continues to be a vital resource for fostering growth, development, and digital literacy both within the children’s home and the surrounding community.
In 2023, we made a significant leap forward by upgrading our computer lab with 24 brand-new computers and renovating the lab space after 12 years. This upgrade is tremendously impacting both our students and the local community.
Mechanical Training Centre (Mec-Tec)
Our Mechanical Training Center, operated by a skilled training instructor, provides practical skill-based training for students who may struggle academically but have a keen interest in technical and mechanical work. Known as Mec-Tec, the center focuses on hands-on training with various hardware tools, preparing students for practical applications.
However, with the growing emphasis on computer and software skills, interest in hardware-based training has waned, resulting in a reduced number of students enrolling in these courses. Despite this, there is a positive development: our instructor and students are actively applying their skills to repair and maintain various projects within the children’s home. This practical application not only reinforces their training but also contributes to the upkeep and improvement of our facilities.
Sponsor Department
The department makes regular contact with the sponsors of the children in Australia, America and Netherlands and sends the necessary reports as required time to time. The department has a key job to respond to any inquiry from sponsors and donors. The case histories of new children admitted in the Children Home are being prepared and accordingly being sent to the donors for sponsorship. This department is responsible to send Christmas greetings cards to the sponsors on behalf of children and the organization. Letters received from sponsors which are required to be translated in Bangla for children and their reply to those into English are done by this department. This department has been assigned to deal with all affairs regarding gifts for children from donors and sponsors.
